Six Killed in Head-On Bus-Truck Collision on Gulu-Kampala Highway

At least six people have lost their lives, and many more sustained serious injuries following a fatal head-on crash between a passenger bus and a truck early Tuesday morning along the busy Gulu-Kampala highway.

The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. on March 10, 2026, at California Village in Kiryandongo District.

The involved vehicles were a Mega Bus traveling from Gulu City to Kampala and a Sino truck heading in the opposite direction.

According to reports, the bus departed Gulu City at midnight carrying 53 passengers. Among the deceased are the bus conductor and a young toddler.

The exact identities of the other victims have not yet been publicly released.

The bus driver, identified only as Kilama, reportedly fled the scene immediately after the collision and remains at large.

No official police statement on the cause of the crash had been issued by the time of publication, though preliminary accounts point to a direct head-on impact.

Rescue operations were promptly carried out, with the bodies of the deceased and numerous injured passengers transported to Kiryandongo Hospital for treatment and postmortem procedures.

A staff member from Mega Bus, speaking anonymously, confirmed the passenger count and departure details.

This tragic accident highlights persistent safety concerns on Uganda’s major highways, particularly the Kampala-Gulu route, which has seen multiple deadly collisions in recent years due to factors like speeding, overtaking, poor road conditions in some sections, and driver fatigue—especially during overnight travel.

Authorities are expected to launch a full investigation into the circumstances, including potential charges against the fleeing driver once apprehended.

The public has been urged to provide any information that could assist police inquiries.
