Uganda Secures UGX 422B for 10 New Aircrafts to Expand Uganda Airlines Fleet

The Ugandan government has secured UGX 422 billion to acquire 10 new aircraft for the national carrier, Uganda Airlines, as part of efforts to strengthen its operational capacity and expand its international route network.

The funding, approved under a supplementary budget, will primarily be used to secure production slots for the aircraft.

Due to high global demand and long manufacturing lead times, booking slots early is considered a critical step in the procurement process.

According to officials, the investment aims to address the airline’s current limitations caused by its relatively small fleet, which has hindered its ability to scale operations, maintain reliable schedules, and capitalise on passenger and cargo opportunities in regional and international markets.

The announcement comes amid ongoing challenges for Uganda Airlines. Since its revival, the carrier has recorded significant operational losses attributed to high startup costs and intense global competition.

In a recent restructuring move, the government dismissed former acting CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki and, in February 2026, President Yoweri Museveni appointed Ethiopian aviation veteran Girma Wake as consultant, advisor, and acting CEO.

Wake is expected to serve in this interim role until a substantive chief executive is appointed in July 2026.

Government officials stated that the combination of fresh capital injection and leadership changes is designed to steer the airline toward long-term sustainability.

However, analysts caution that the success of this expansion will largely depend on strong management systems, financial discipline, and effective route planning.

The move underscores the government’s continued commitment to developing a viable national airline despite the structural and financial hurdles faced since its relaunch.
