The ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has initiated steps to remove Jemma Nunu Kumba as Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA).
According to sources within the party, the SPLM Political Bureau held a meeting on Monday, March 30, 2026, during which it resolved to replace the Speaker, who also serves as the party’s Deputy Chairperson for the Equatoria region.
The decision comes amid growing internal divisions within the SPLM and the broader Transitional Government of National Unity.
Jemma Nunu Kumba has been Speaker since 2021.
Although the SPLM has not yet issued an official statement, party insiders say the move is part of a wider realignment of positions within the unity government ahead of the planned December 2026 general elections.
Jemma Nunu Kumba, one of the most prominent female politicians in South Sudan, has faced criticism from some SPLM factions over her handling of parliamentary affairs and perceived closeness to certain opposition figures.
If the SPLM proceeds with the removal, she would become the second high-profile Speaker to be replaced under the Revitalized Peace Agreement, following the earlier ouster of previous parliamentary leaders.
As of now, no official communication has been sent to the TNLA regarding her removal, and Jemma Nunu Kumba has not yet issued a public response.
The development adds to the growing political tensions in Juba as different factions within the SPLM and the unity government continue to reposition themselves ahead of the elections.
