NRM Sets April 7–15 Kyankwanzi Retreat for Newly Elected MPs

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General, Richard Todwong  has said everything is set for the week-long retreat for newly elected MPs at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, Todwong said the retreat will commence on April,7 to 15.

“The retreat will be attended by  newly elected MP affiliated to NRM and independents who are willing to get affiliated to NRM. This retreat is important because in the culture of the party, we use  it to bond with newly elected leaders to understand their constituencies and many other issues,” Todwong said.

The NRM deputy Secretary General, Rose Namayanja Nsereko said the retreat will be used to breakdown the NRM manifesto for the newly elected MPs as it runs under the theme of aligning NRM leaders towards protecting gains and making qualitative leap to middle income economy

“It is these MPs tasked with responsibility to ensure whatever goes on in parliament is intended to implement our manifesto and therefore majority of the topics during the retreat will rotate around that,” Namayanja said.

He said since there are many new young MPs, the retreat will be used to ensure they get grounded into the NRM ideology.

“There will be topics on regional integration and geo politics and the global setting, Uganda’s security apparatus, instruments of the state, political economy, the theory of Musevenomics. We shall also use the retreat to unpack the higher middle income status and how we intend to achieve it.”

Namayanja added,” We shall also discuss the role of infrastructure in social economic transformation of the country, the role of agriculture and the parliament, its mandate, processes and managing public expectations. We shall also handle managing cohesion within the party and how parliament operates within multiparty dispensation.”

The NRM deputy Secretary General said the retreat will be opened by a speech by the national party chairman President Museveni who will also give a closing speech.

According to the NRM Secretary General, all newly elected MPs in the 12th parliament are welcome to attend.

“We are even inviting members of opposition if they are willing to come and learn because what is to be discussed is about the future of Uganda. It is important if opposition comes to attend. This retreat gives you some of the basics you might not be able to know about this country in a way you will appreciate where this country has reached,” Todwong said.
