Edith Katende Mufumbiro, wife of National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, has died after a prolonged battle with cancer.
She passed away shortly after 3:00 a.m. today.
NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine, announced the news in a statement, describing Edith as a “dear sister and comrade.”
He highlighted the tragic circumstances surrounding her death, noting that her husband remains detained at Luzira Upper Prison on charges the party describes as politically motivated.
“Edith passed on after 3:00am today following a hard-fought battle with cancer,” Bobi Wine stated.
“At the time of her passing, her dear husband Waiswa remains detained at Luzira Upper Prison for no crime whatsoever. His only crime is speaking out against injustice and misrule.”
Waiswa Mufumbiro faces “unlawful drilling” charges allegedly committed on February 12, 2025, at the NUP headquarters.
The party insists he was not present, as he was at Mulago Cancer Institute caring for his wife at the time.
Despite repeated bail applications, including pleas to be released to care for his sick wife, the courts have denied his release.
Bobi Wine criticised the judiciary, stating it is “fully aware of these facts” yet has “chosen to conspire in this persecution.”
He concluded with a message of hope: “As difficult as it is, we remain hopeful that we shall overcome some day. May God grant the family, especially our brother Waiswa, the strength he needs at this time.”
The family has not yet announced funeral arrangements.
Condolences continue to pour in from across the political divide and the public.
