The Ugandan government has allocated Shs12.5 billion to support the Uganda Cranes national team and improve the quality of domestic football clubs as part of preparations for co-hosting the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.
The funding was revealed by Denis Mugimba, Chairperson of the Communications and Signage Sub-Committee for AFCON 2027, during a recent briefing.
Out of the Shs12.5 billion, a significant portion will directly support the Uganda Cranes senior national team’s preparations, while the rest will be channelled towards upgrading selected domestic clubs and football infrastructure to raise the overall standard of the game in the country.
Mugimba explained that the investment is part of a broader strategy to ensure Uganda fields a competitive team and hosts a successful tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
The money will also help improve training facilities, player welfare, and technical capacity within the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) and its member clubs.
This allocation forms part of the wider Shs905 billion the government has committed towards AFCON 2027 preparations, covering stadium upgrades, road infrastructure, hospital improvements, hotel development, and marketing under the “Destination Uganda” campaign.
Uganda is expected to host several matches during the 2027 tournament, making robust preparation of both the national team and local clubs essential for the success of the event.
