A white taxi operating in parts of Kira and Najjera is at the centre of a police investigation after being linked to multiple alleged robberies targeting passengers.

Kira Division police have impounded the vehicle, registration number UAW 401G, which is suspected to have been used in several incidents along routes between Najeera, Kyebando, and the Northern Bypass.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala confirmed that the case forms part of a wider probe into thefts targeting passengers in the greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.

“The vehicle is suspected to have been used in a series of robberies within the Kampala Metropolitan Area. We are following up on all leads,” Kawala said.

One of the victims, a 20-year-old student from Bulabira, reported that he boarded the taxi at Najeera Shell fuel station on June 11, 2026, heading to the city centre. Mid-journey, he was allegedly tricked into stepping out of the vehicle.

“I was told the door was not properly closed and asked to step out. I didn’t suspect anything at the time,” the student told investigators. “When I got out, I realized my phone was gone.”

Police say a similar incident involving the same taxi occurred on May 27, 2026, when a female passenger was robbed of her mobile phone while travelling along the Northern Bypass in Kyebando.

The breakthrough came on June 12, 2026, when officers spotted the suspicious taxi in Namugongo and attempted to stop it. The driver reportedly sped off, leading to a chase that ended with the vehicle’s interception along the Northern Bypass.

“One suspect, Muwonge Isma, a 47-year-old resident of Kyengera, was arrested at the scene,” Kawala said.

Police recovered a panga (machete) and a large stone from inside the vehicle, both of which have been retained as exhibits. Investigations are ongoing.
