Internationally recognized Danish wildlife journalist and environmental explorer Klaus Thymann has been arrested in Kampala, sparking concerns about Uganda’s treatment of foreign journalists and conservation researchers.
Thymann, known for his extensive work on climate change and endangered ecosystems, was reportedly detained while engaging with authorities regarding permits for his environmental activities in the Rwenzori Mountains.
According to police sources, the award-winning journalist is currently being held at Kira Road Police Station as investigations continue.
He may later be transferred to western Uganda, where the alleged offences under investigation are said to have taken place.
Thymann has built a global reputation through scientific expeditions, underwater research, and documentary reporting that highlight the effects of climate change on glaciers and vulnerable wildlife habitats.
His projects in the Rwenzori region have drawn significant international scientific and environmental interest.
Authorities have not yet publicly released full details of the case.
The arrest has already drawn attention from press freedom advocates and environmental organizations, who are closely monitoring Uganda’s engagement with international researchers and journalists.
Observers note that the incident could attract broader international scrutiny given Thymann’s prominent global profile and long-standing conservation work across Africa.
It also comes amid ongoing debates over civic freedoms in the country.
