President Yoweri Museveni has thrown his weight behind a proposal to introduce a single East African entry visa for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Uganda will co-host alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

The President made the endorsement during a meeting with Uganda’s AFCON Local Organising Committee at State House in Entebbe on Wednesday.

“This is common sense. I support it [single entry visa],” Museveni said, according to a State House statement. He directed officials to initiate consultations with their counterparts in Kenya and Tanzania to fast-track the initiative.

The proposed visa would enable football fans, tourists, match officials, and participating teams to move freely across the three host nations for up to four months without needing separate entry permits, easing travel and enhancing the tournament experience.

The briefing to the President also covered progress on Uganda’s preparations, with Museveni reaffirming government commitment to successful hosting.

He pledged full financial support, accelerated infrastructure development, and stronger regional cooperation.

The 2027 AFCON is expected to be a major boost for East Africa’s tourism and economy, with the single visa system seen as a key logistical enabler for seamless cross-border movement during the competition.

This development aligns with broader efforts toward greater East African Community (EAC) integration, building on existing initiatives like the East African Single Tourist Visa.
