The Minister of Information in Upper Nile State has confirmed that five soldiers were killed after unknown gunmen attacked an SSPDF base in Papuojo Boma, Tonga Payam of Panyikang County, early on Sunday morning.

The assault took place around 5:30 a.m. and targeted the SSPDF Division Two (Agwelek) base.

According to the minister, the attackers fled toward Jonglei State after the incident.

“A group of unknown gunmen attacked the SSPDF base in Papuojo. Five soldiers lost their lives in the attack. The assailants then crossed into Jonglei State, and their identity is still unknown,” he stated.

SSPDF forces successfully repelled the attackers, who withdrew across the border.

The minister suggested the gunmen could be linked to the SPLA-IO, though investigations are ongoing to determine their exact affiliation.

The Upper Nile State government strongly condemned the attack.

The minister urged against such actions at this critical time ahead of national elections, warning that some groups may be trying to exploit instability in the region.

He emphasized that communities in Panyikang County are focused on preparing for the upcoming elections.

SSPDF Division Two has since stepped up security measures in the area to restore calm and allow residents to carry out their daily activities without disruption.
