The Jonglei State government has reported fresh fighting in Walgak Payam, Akobo County, between government troops and SPLA-IO forces on Sunday morning.

However, authorities say ground conditions and specific details remain unclear.

Walgak serves as one of the main payams in Akobo County and functions as an important administrative hub located west of Akobo town.

Jonglei State Minister of Information Nyamar Lony Thichot confirmed that the state government received initial reports of the incident and is continuing to collect more information.

“We still lack concrete details about what happened in Walgak,” the minister stated. “We only just learned of the outbreak of fighting, but we have no further information at this stage.”

She added that the number of casualties is unknown, and the exact circumstances are unclear because the events involve military operations.

The minister suggested that the SSPDF spokesperson would be in a better position to provide updates.

When contacted by Eye Radio, SSPDF spokesperson Major General Lul Ruai Koang declined to comment on the reported clashes.

He directed inquiries back to the Jonglei State government.

These latest clashes follow a short period of relative calm between government and opposition forces.

The pause came after several months of intense violence across parts of northern Jonglei State earlier this year.

The earlier fighting forced thousands of civilians to flee their homes, with many crossing into neighboring Ethiopia seeking safety.

Last week, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) shut down its temporary base in Akobo after operating there for nine years.

The base, which opened in 2018, was intended to protect civilians and support humanitarian aid delivery.

According to UNMISS, the decision to withdraw personnel and equipment followed extended efforts to improve the security situation and adhered to standard United Nations procedures.
