Kampala Metropolitan South Police have arrested a 53-year-old businesswoman accused of impersonating an official from the Office of the President and defrauding a Member of Parliament of Shs60 million.

The suspect, Hope Tumwebaze, a resident of Kamukuzi in Mbarara City, was arrested following a complaint by the affected MP.

Speaking to journalists at Police Headquarters in Naguru on Monday, Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said the suspect allegedly posed as a staff member attached to the Office of the President.

According to preliminary investigations, between June 2025 and subsequent months, Tumwebaze approached the MP at various locations in Kampala. She claimed she could help secure government funds earmarked for selected districts.

“Relying on these false representations, the complainant transferred a total of Shs60 million to the suspect,” Rusoke explained.

Police opened a General Enquiry File, which led to the suspect’s arrest.

She remains in custody as investigations continue to determine the full details of the fraud and check for possible accomplices or additional victims.

Rusoke warned the public, especially leaders and public officials, to always verify any claims of government facilitation through official channels before making any financial payments.

He also urged citizens to report suspected cases of impersonation or fraud to the nearest police station promptly.
