President Salva Kiir has encouraged South Sudanese citizens to foster unity and actively participate in the country’s first post-independence elections.

He emphasized that national solidarity remains crucial for addressing the nation’s ongoing challenges.

During his national address on Thursday, delivered to commemorate South Sudan’s 15th Independence Anniversary, President Kiir honoured the individuals who sacrificed their lives in the liberation struggle.

He also expressed gratitude to members of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces and other security organs for their ongoing efforts to safeguard the nation.

The President acknowledged that the conflict which erupted in 2013 had hindered the country’s development. He stressed that the aspirations of independence could only be realised through sustained peace, reconciliation, and unified national efforts.

President Kiir further drew attention to the ongoing preparations for South Sudan’s inaugural general elections since gaining independence.

He characterised these polls as a significant step toward fully implementing the Revitalized Peace Agreement and concluding the transitional period.

He appealed to political parties, civil society groups, and ordinary citizens to back the forthcoming voter registration process. This exercise, he noted, would enable South Sudanese to fully exercise their democratic rights during the December elections.

“As South Sudan prepares for democratic elections, we call upon all political actors to honour the commitments our nation has made under the convention of the Rights of Person with disabilities, the women, peace and security agenda, and the Maputo Protocol,” the President stated.

President Kiir wrapped up his speech by encouraging peaceful celebrations and extending his best wishes to all South Sudanese for a joyful 15th Independence Day.
