Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) troops, working with Somali National Army (SNA) units, have stepped up joint security patrols in the Barawe area to combat Al-Shabaab militants and improve overall stability.

The forces, operating under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), carried out a joint patrol in the Barawe Sub-Sector. The operation focused on reinforcing peace and security in the coastal town and its surrounding regions.

Conducted on Saturday, the patrol was led by Battle Group 45 Commander Col Justus Musenene and his SNA counterpart, 66 Brigade Commander Col Abdurahman Elmi.

Col Musenene explained that the patrol aimed to enhance security, build confidence among local residents, and prevent Al-Shabaab from operating freely in the area.

“Today’s patrol shows teamwork, comradeship and what we can achieve when we work together,” Col Musenene said.

He added that AUSSOM forces are dedicated to mentoring Somali troops, reinforcing local security institutions, and fostering greater trust with civilians. The commander also issued a strong warning to Al-Shabaab fighters.

“We know where you are, and we’re coming for you. The better option is to surrender if you want to be safe,” Col Musenene stated.

Col Elmi reinforced the message and called on residents of Barawe to assist security forces by providing timely information.

“This joint patrol with our UPDF comrades proves that together we are stronger. To the people of Barawe, your safety comes first. To the enemy, know that SNA and AUSSOM are united, and we will not allow the enemy to disturb the prevailing peace in the region,” he said.

Local residents who met the patrol team expressed support for the increased security presence and committed to sharing useful information with the authorities to help sustain peace.

Commanders from both sides announced plans to carry out more similar operations in the Barawe Sub-Sector. These efforts seek to keep pressure on threats and promote an environment conducive to lasting peace and development.

The operation included the participation of 145 Infantry Battalion Commanding Officer Lt Col Geoffrey Ochan, Embresko Forward Operating Base Commander Maj Francis Odede, and Battle Group 45 Military Information Officer Maj David Akandwanaho, along with other UPDF and SNA officers and personnel.
