At least one person was killed and 12 others injured — including a soldier — in renewed fighting between rival communities in Jonglei State’s Bor County, a senior police official reported on Wednesday.

The clashes broke out on Tuesday evening and continued into Wednesday, despite calls for restraint from local leaders, according to Jonglei State Police Commissioner Maj. Gen. Abenego Akol Ayuong.

Ayuong told Radio Tamazuj that the incident began around 8 p.m. on Tuesday when youths from the Abang community crossed a main road and attacked members of the Malual community while they were eating.

Four people were injured in the initial attack. “Authorities immediately intervened and appealed for calm,” Ayuong said.

However, tensions escalated again on Wednesday when Malual community members launched a retaliatory assault.

“One elderly man was killed and four people were wounded. The Malual community also recorded three additional injuries during the violence.”

A soldier sent to help restore order was also injured, pushing the total number of wounded to at least 12. All injured individuals have been taken to Bor State Hospital for treatment.

The police commissioner added that the Jonglei State Security Committee will convene to review the situation and begin an investigation into the latest violence.

These clashes represent the most recent episode in a prolonged territorial dispute between the Abang and Malual communities over the Malual-Chaat area.

Tensions have persisted since late April, when conflict first erupted following the establishment of a new administrative boma, which intensified disagreements over boundaries and local governance.
