Uganda Airlines Places Order for Eight Boeing Jets to Boost Fleet

Uganda Airlines has signed a deal for eight new Boeing aircraft to grow its regional and international operations.

The purchase consists of four Boeing 737-8 models and four 787-9 Dreamliners. This represents the national carrier’s first direct acquisition from Boeing.

The agreement was formally announced by both parties at the Farnborough International Airshow on July 21, 2026.

According to Uganda Airlines, the new planes will address rising passenger demand, update the existing fleet, and enable additional route launches.

Ato Girma Wake, the airline’s CEO, noted that the acquisition advances plans to develop Entebbe International Airport into a key regional aviation hub.

“This commitment with Boeing marks a defining step in Uganda Airlines’ growth journey and in our broader ambition to position Entebbe as a strategic aviation hub for the region,” Wake stated.

He added that the aircraft will strengthen Uganda’s connections to regional, continental, and global markets while boosting tourism, trade, investment, and cargo services.

The Boeing 737-8 is configured to seat 160 to 180 passengers in a two-class layout and offers a range of up to 6,480 kilometres.

The airline intends to use these jets on African routes as well as services to the Middle East and India.

The larger 787-9 Dreamliner has a range of up to 15,370 kilometres and will support long-haul flights to Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Brad McMullen, Boeing’s senior vice president for Commercial Sales and Marketing, welcomed Uganda Airlines as a new customer.

“We’re pleased to welcome Uganda Airlines as a Boeing customer and support the airline’s next phase of growth with the 737-8 and 787-9,” he said.

McMullen highlighted that the two aircraft types provide the necessary range, flexibility, and efficiency for serving varied markets.

The new planes are expected to reduce fuel consumption by 20 to 25 percent compared to the models they will replace.

The deal also includes provisions for training, technical support, and capacity building.

Wake emphasized that the partnership will enhance operational capabilities and contribute to broader economic development in Uganda.

Uganda Airlines currently operates flights to 17 destinations across 13 countries from its base at Entebbe International Airport.
