President Yoweri Museveni, serving as Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has approved the promotion of more than 300 officers in a major military exercise.

Among those elevated, six Brigadier Generals were promoted to the rank of Major General.

The officers include: Brig Gen Godwin Karugaba, Brig Gen Chris Musinguzi Bagonza, Brig Gen Michael Nyarwa, Brig Gen Richard Karemire, Brig Gen David Robert Gonyi, and Acting Maj Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, whose substantive promotion to Major General was confirmed.

The broader initiative saw President Museveni promote a total of 301 officers across general, senior, and junior ranks.

Additionally, 83 officers previously serving in acting capacities received confirmation in their substantive ranks, while 89 Second Lieutenants had their probationary appointments confirmed as full Lieutenants.

Acting Director of Defence Public Information, Col. Chris Magezi, described the promotions as a strategic move to bolster the UPDF’s leadership framework.

“These promotions and confirmations strengthen leadership across all levels of the Force and ensure continuity in fulfilling the UPDF’s constitutional mandate to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Uganda,” Col. Magezi stated.

The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, along with the UPDF, extended congratulations to all promoted and confirmed officers, viewing the exercise as an important step in improving leadership and operational readiness within the military.
