Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda has directed its employees to keep working remotely as the company carries out assessments of its office premises ahead of a full physical return.

The instruction was shared internally after NMG announced the resumption of its television, radio, print, and digital platforms. Staff will only be recalled to the Namuwongo headquarters and Serena broadcast facilities once management completes evaluations and deems the sites ready.

“All staff who may be required to immediately return to our Namuwongo and Serena offices will be contacted directly by their supervisors with necessary guidance and instruction,” an internal Human Resources notice stated. The company pledged to keep employees updated on the progress.

Editorial teams had already prepared business continuity plans during the shutdown, with journalists holding virtual meetings and readying content for when operations restarted.

Employees at Commercial Plaza, home to The EastAfrican newspaper and other departments, have been asked to resume on-site work, as those premises were unaffected by the earlier security action.

The shutdown began on June 28 when security forces sealed the Namuwongo headquarters and Serena facilities, halting operations at Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM, and Dembe FM. Security personnel remained on site throughout the closure.

Staff have expressed a mix of relief, cautious optimism, and lingering uncertainty following the prolonged disruption. The period was especially challenging for freelancers and those reliant on daily newsroom and production activities. Management, including officials from the regional headquarters in Kenya, assured employees that welfare and benefits would be prioritized.
