President Yoweri Museveni has instructed Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba to release former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among from house arrest, according to a post by the general on X.

“Mzee has also instructed me to release AAA from house arrest. We shall do that as well,” Muhoozi wrote on Monday, referring to Among by her initials.

Among, the Bukedea Woman MP and former third-highest ranking official in Uganda, has been under restricted movement at her Nakasero residence in Kampala since mid-May 2026.

Security personnel from the Special Forces Command and police maintained a continuous presence, controlling access to the property.

The house arrest followed a series of high-profile raids on her residences as part of Operation Maliza Ufisadi, an anti-corruption drive sanctioned by Museveni and publicly championed by Muhoozi.

Joint teams of police, military and intelligence operatives searched properties in Nakasero, Kigo, Ntinda and her rural home in Bukedea District.

Investigators seized several luxury vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce Cullinan valued at approximately Shs 3.4 billion, a customised Range Rover, Mercedes-Benz models, a Lexus and Land Cruisers. Cash, documents, land titles and other valuables were also recovered.

Authorities described the items as suspected proceeds of crime linked to allegations of illicit enrichment, abuse of office and money laundering during Among’s tenure as Speaker.

The operations began shortly after Museveni met Among at State House and after she withdrew from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament.

She had faced growing scrutiny over her lifestyle, including the acquisition of the Rolls-Royce.

The Inspectorate of Government later submitted a report on the probe to the President.

Among has not been formally charged.

She previously stated she would cooperate with investigators and maintained that some assets came from private business interests.

Her supporters, including Teso MPs, earlier appealed for clemency, citing health concerns.

The release order marks a significant development more than three months after the raids began.

It remains unclear whether recovered property will be returned or if further legal action will follow.

Muhoozi indicated the instruction would be carried out promptly.Among continues to serve as Bukedea Woman MP and holds a senior position in the National Resistance Movement.
