Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has expressed her thanks to President Museveni for what she called his “parental grace” and the choice to show her mercy after she was freed from house arrest.

In a post on X, Among first thanked God for the “gift of life and freedom” and then conveyed her deep appreciation to Museveni for stepping in.

“I take this opportunity to thank the Almighty God for the gift of life and freedom. My profound and heartfelt appreciation goes to His Excellency, President Yoweri Museveni, for his unmatched parental grace and decision to grant me mercy,” Among stated.

Her remarks came after Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced that Museveni had ordered her release from house arrest.

Muhoozi also indicated that the President had decided Among would not face prosecution.

Among had remained under house arrest since May 2026 while investigations examined claims of corruption, illicit accumulation of wealth and abuse of office from her time as Speaker of Parliament.

In the same Wednesday message, Among also praised Gen Muhoozi for “his professionalism throughout this period.”

“As the Woman MP for Bukedea, I look forward to continuing my work for my constituents and standing firm with our revolutionary leadership.”

Among’s statement follows appeals by political and community leaders from the Teso sub-region urging Museveni to pardon her and permit her to seek specialised medical care.

The President’s decision has sparked fresh public discussion on how the allegations against Among have been managed and on the wider issues of accountability and presidential clemency in Uganda.
