Students at Uganda’s largest university have gone on strike in protest of the arrest of several students arrested Thursday.

On Friday, Police fired bullets and tear gas to disperse Makerere students who were demanding the release of the detainees currently held at the nearby Wandegeya Police Station.

Teargas and bullets rocked Makerere and student villages such as Kikoni as students protested despite a ban by police chief Kale Kayihura of age limit demos.

Students have joined politicians and civil society organizations opposed to a presidential age limit removal bill, which is expected to be tabled in Parliament next week.

The bill to be tabled by Igara West MP Raphael Magyezi seeks to delete article 102b that provides for the upper age limit of 75 above which one is not allowed to stand for president.

If the article is not deleted, Uganda’s three-decade president Yoweri Museveni will be ineligible for reelection when the east African land locked third world country next goes to the polls in 2021.
