Over 45 people have Monday been arrested in Kampala over the protests demanding the release of Kyadondo East MP and singer Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, Police has said.

Police and military engaged in running battles with protesters as they continued to light fires in the middle of the road, blocking traffic and bringing business to a standstill.

Police spokesperson Emilian Kayima while speaking at a press briefing on Monday revealed that 45 people had been arresting for involving in the protests in different parts of Kampala.

“Today there were riots in some parts of Kampala including Kisekka Market, Nakasero Market, Martin Road and some areas of Old Kampala,” Kayima told journalists.

“A number of people have been arrested. The last time I checked they were 45. We want to ask Ugandans especially Kampalans to desist from riots. Riots are criminal acts which don’t build the country; they break it,” he added.

The protests which started from Kisekka Market, later spread across the city centre and outskirts like Wandegeya and Bukoto.

By 6:00PM, security forces had taken control and brought business back to normal.
