President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Tuesday visited the CCTV Camera Command Center at Natete Police Station.
The first phase of the surveillance system installation which began in June 2018 has seen 359 out of 3,322 live CCTV cameras mounted to monitor Lungujja, Old Kampala, Rubaga, Kawaala, Kabowa, Nateete, Mutundwe and surroundings.
The project is one of the measures that have been put in place to fight urban crime. They are also encouraging people to introduce home CCTV and Monitored alarm systems where possible to increase protection in more areas. People from other regions where crime is too prevalent can also adopt this safety measure in their homes and workplaces. They might need to get in touch with an experienced electrician (like Aardvark Electric – electrical repairs, for instance) in their vicinity to get it installed properly, but the benefits it can reap are innumerous, in terms of safety concerns.
President Yoweri Museveni said urban crime is not as complex as fighting a war but rather an issue of intelligence.
While addressing the residents of Natete, President Museveni told locals to keep the faith and assured that problems of urban insecurity committed by armed assassins riding motorcycles would be solved.
“What we needed were eyes, ears and a nose to sense them. It is what the cameras will do. Once we see these criminals, we shall get them, ” Museveni said.
Speaking briefly after the presentation about the capabilities of the cameras and command centre, the Ag. Director ICT CP. Felix Baryamwitsaki said that Police will no longer rely on eye witnesses alone but shall also use scientific analysis to arrest criminals.
CP. Baryamwitsaki highlighted on the key capabilities of the cameras which are surveillance, picking up number plates of wanted motor vehicles, identifying suspected criminals, monitoring traffic flow among others.
