Covid19: Uganda Mulls Home-schooling as Lockdown Continues

The Ministry of Education has revealed plans to embark on homeschooling programs as coronavirus restrictions are still firmly in place. Addressing the nation on Monday evening, the Minister for Education Janet Museveni relayed that her Ministry was ready to start supplying learning materials to students and pupils who are at home and cannot access learning materials since schools are closed.

“The Ministry has produced a framework to guide the process of continuity of learning. We have also identified the basic competencies or concepts to study and harmonize learning packages or materials for use in continuity of learning while learners are still at home, and prepared guidelines for Local Governments to ensure effective learning,” she said.

According to the minister, the materials will be an addition to those that are already being delivered on radios, televisions and online.

Janet also revealed that the ministry shall focus on primary one to primary seven and secondary level for the meantime.

“The Ministry will hand these materials to the district leadership led by the RDC (Resident District Commissioner) and the CAO (Chief Administrative Officer). The RDCs and CAOs will distribute the materials to the sub-county chiefs who in turn will hand them over to the parish chiefs and parish chiefs will use the LC1s to hand them over the individual homes,” she explained.

The Minister expressed a lot of optimism and called on district leaders to assist in the process of distribution and monitoring of learning materials.

Earlier on, the ministry of education had projected the resume of schools to be on April 27, however, this will not be possible due to the extension of the lockdown for 21 more days by the president.
