The chief judge of Uganda Bart Katureebe has spoken out allegations of human rights violations.
Bart Katureebe’s submission comes just a few days when the opposition leader led by Kyadondo East Member of parliament Hon. Kyagulanyi Ssentamu petitioned the United Nations to intervene in stopping the ongoing acts of torture and illegal detention of Ugandans by the state.
“When someone is arrested, he should be brought to court within 48hours. This rule is court own good and has to be respected,” Justice Katureebe said while appearing on a local television morning talk show.
The chief judge also added that people are entitled to a speedy trial.
Speaking about the delayed court proceedings, Chief judge Bart Katureebe admitted that the judiciary has a huge case backlog.
“I found it there. We have tried to reduce it, but it is still there. In a situation where the country is on a standstill, the backlog is going to increase. However, the case backlog is not only in Uganda,” Bart Katureebe said.
