Deputy Speaker Anita Among doesn’t have to resign her position for her to contest for speakership, Director Communications and Public Affairs for the Parliament of Uganda Chris Obore has said.

“The Clerk to Parliament has not received any resignation from the Deputy Speaker Anita Annet Among. And there is no legal requirement for her to resign if she needs to vie for position of Speaker,” Obore said.

He was responding to rumors that were spreading on social media alleging that the Deputy Speaker had resigned her position in preparation to run for a place that was occupied by the late Jacob Oulanyah.

Oulanyah died on Sunday from a hospital in Seattle, US where he had been admitted for months.

Government has set Friday March 25th as the date when parliament will cast votes to find his replacement.

Several individuals have reportedly shown interest in the speakership position including Among, former speaker Rebecca Kadaga and Lwemiyaga representative Theodore Ssekikuubo.

Whereas people are purporting that the deputy speaker has to resign her position, Obore says she is not legally required to resign.

“It’s members of Cabinet that the law commands to resign first,” Obore tweeted.

The Tower Post understands that the NRM will hold nominations for interested individuals at the party’s headquarters tomorrow morning.
