As the scheduled endorsement of President Salva Kiir for the upcoming election approaches in the greater Equatoria region, the Secretary General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement party (SPLM) has issued a call to party members in the area to actively engage in recruiting more supporters.
Addressing party members at the National Secretariat in Juba on Monday regarding the party’s plans for the new year, Peter Lam Both urged secretaries, deputy secretaries, directors, and other members to actively participate in expanding the party’s membership.
The SPLM secretary general revealed that the party is organizing a substantial endorsement event for the president in the capital city of Juba, where members of the diplomatic corps in the country will be invited to observe the proceedings.
“In January, we commence with the endorsement of President Salva Kiir here in greater Equatoria, in the capital Juba. It is the collective responsibility of all of us to bring people on that day,” Lam emphasized.
Lam clarified, “If you are from greater Equatoria, serving as a secretary, deputy secretary, director, or deputy director, your role is to ensure the attendance of your community members.”
He added, “We’re planning to invite the international community to join us. If they witness a large gathering with so many people, they’ll acknowledge that Comrade Salva has significant support.”
According to Lam, the party has a packed schedule this year. Following the January endorsement in the Equatoria region, the focus will shift to the Upper Nile region in February for the final endorsement of President Kiir.
“In February, we will carry out the endorsement in Upper Nile. This endorsement holds great significance for Upper Nile, marking the first time people will gather since the conflict,” he emphasized. “The president’s visit to Upper Nile aims to foster unity among the people. A successful endorsement will not only unite us but also contribute to winning the elections.”
Lam urged SPLM officials from both regions to collaborate closely with their chairpersons to ensure the success of these events.
The top SPLM official revealed that other planned activities for the year, leading up to the elections, include hosting conferences for the party, starting at the grassroots level and culminating in a national convention.
“In the same year, we’ll be organizing conferences, spanning from the grassroots to the national convention,” he concluded.
