South Sudan’s Kiir in Uganda for NAM Summit

South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has arrived in Uganda to attend the ongoing 19th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement taking place at the Speke Resort Munyonyo.

Kiir touched down at Entebbe International Airport on Wednesday afternoon and was welcomed by officials from Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Non-Aligned Movement is the second biggest global organisation after the United Nations, comprising of 120 member states. It was founded in 1961 to foster new ways of resolving global issues.

South Sudan is the only African country that’s not a member of NAM and this year’s summit will see its admission into the organization.

According to South Sudanese presidential spokesperson Lily Adhieu Martin, President Kiir will also attend IGAD Heads of State Summit to discuss political issues facing the Horn of Africa.

Adhieu further revealed that Kiir will attend the G77+China summit which aims at boosting cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, sustainable development, climate change, poverty eradication and digital economy.
