South Sudan: Activist Urges President Kiir to Address Current Economic Hardship

Human Rights Activist Ter Manyang Gatwech has called on President Salva Kiir Mayardit to address the current economic hardship caused by the depreciating local currency (SSP) against the U.S dollar.

“The Centre for Peace and Advocacy calls on president Salva Kiir Mayardit to address the current economic crisis that is causing confusion and hardship among citizens. It is crucial for the president  to provide alternative solutions,” said Ter Manyang Gatwech, the Executive Director for the Centre for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) in a statement issued in Juba.

Gatwech’s remarks come in the wake of the SSP depreciating to it’s lowest point against the dollar. The SSP is currently exchanging with the dollar at 3000 from the previous 2600.

“Your Excellency, it is time for us to confront the situation with an open mind and honesty, in order to prevent another unforeseen crisis from arising due to the current economic hardship experienced by citizens,” he said.

Gatwech said that the revitalized transitional government of national unity should give hope to millions of South Sudanese who are struggling to put food on the table due to the prevailing economic crisis.
