Officials Ban Jerseys with “Funny” Statements ahead of CHAN Quarter Finals at Namboole

As the Uganda Cranes prepare to face defending champions Senegal in a highly anticipated African Nations Championship (CHAN) fixture this Saturday, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has issued a firm warning to fans regarding appropriate conduct and dress code at Namboole Stadium.

During a press briefing at the Uganda Media Centre on Wednesday, Diana Nabuuso—a member of the LOC Communications and Signage Committee—announced that fans wearing jerseys bearing inappropriate or offensive inscriptions would be denied entry.

“We are taking a clear stand against jerseys that contain disrespectful messages or what we call ‘minis.’ Such attire undermines public decency and will not be tolerated. Offenders will be stopped at the gates,” Nabuuso told journalists.

“We encourage unity, respect, and discipline from all supporters.”

The advisory follows a growing trend of fans customizing jerseys with viral phrases and slang popularized on platforms like TikTok and Facebook. While many consider the inscriptions humorous, organizers argue that some cross the line and could erode standards of public decorum.

Ticketing and Seating Clarified

Addressing concerns about ticketing and stadium capacity, Dr. Dennis K. Mugimba, Chairperson of the LOC Communications and Signage Sub-Committee, clarified that although tickets often sell out, not all seats are filled due to safety protocols set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

“CAF regulations require a safety buffer of about 4,000 seats,” Dr. Mugimba explained. “This should not be mistaken for poor planning. The actual maximum occupancy for a sellout at Namboole is 34,006, even though the stadium holds up to 38,000.”

Heightened Interest as Uganda Tops Group

With Uganda currently leading their group, the upcoming clash with Senegal has attracted significant national interest. The LOC has called on fans to present themselves with dignity and wear attire that reflects national pride, especially as the eyes of the continent are on Uganda during the tournament.

Kickoff Time Rescheduled

In a related update, organizers announced that the quarterfinal match kickoff time has been pushed from 17:00 to 20:00 EAT due to adjustments in the tournament schedule.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early, observe stadium regulations, and contribute to a safe, respectful, and spirited football environment.
