The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has begun conducting patrols throughout the capital, Kampala, in what the military describes as a standard security initiative to ensure public safety in the lead-up to the general elections scheduled for January 15, 2026.

Acting UPDF spokesperson Col Chris Magezi confirmed the deployment in an official statement, aiming to calm public concerns by starting with the reassurance: “No cause for alarm.”

Col Magezi explained that the patrols are a proactive measure prompted by worrisome statements emerging from the political landscape.

“The UPDF does not treat lightly any threats of election-related violence made by certain political figures and their backers,” the statement noted.

The military stressed its auxiliary role, coordinating closely with the Uganda Police Force.

“In partnership with the police, we are committed to ensuring the safety and confidence of all citizens,” Col Magezi added.

The collaborative effort is focused on safeguarding both public infrastructure and private assets while upholding general law and order.

The statement wrapped up with a strong caution, declaring that any instances of criminal behavior or actions endangering public peace “will be addressed swiftly and strictly in line with Ugandan laws.”

This development occurs amid rising tensions as the country approaches the highly anticipated elections, with security forces emphasizing readiness to maintain stability.
