South Sudan: SPLM Schedules Joint Caucus Meeting in Juba Amid Election Preparations

The ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) will convene a joint caucus meeting at its headquarters in Juba on Monday, January 12, 2026, according to party officials.

A notice released on Saturday by SPLM Secretary for Culture, Information and Communication Daniel Badagbu Rimbasa invited members of the Political Bureau, National Liberation Council, executive and parliamentary caucuses, along with advisers, secretaries, and deputy secretaries.

The session is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at SPLM House.

While the official agenda remains undisclosed, the gathering is widely seen as a key step in the SPLM’s preparations for South Sudan’s upcoming general elections, now set for December 2026.

These developments follow recent approvals by the presidency and cabinet of amendments to critical elements of the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement (R-ARCSS).

The changes include decoupling the elections from the ongoing permanent constitution-making process, the national population census, and various institutional reforms.

They also eliminate language giving the peace deal precedence over the constitution.

The proposed amendments still require parliamentary approval and endorsement from the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC), the body overseeing the peace process.

The 2018 agreement, signed by President Salva Kiir, opposition leader Riek Machar, and other figures, has faced multiple extensions and delays.

Elections have been postponed several times, with the current date fixed for December 22, 2026.

Allies of Machar have voiced strong objections, arguing that the consultations leading to these amendments excluded key stakeholders from their side.

This meeting comes as the SPLM continues to emphasize its commitment to moving forward with elections, even amid ongoing debates over the peace agreement’s implementation and inclusivity.
