South Sudan: Governor Lobong Calls for Calm in Narus After SPLA-IO and SSPDF Clashes

Governor Louise Lobong Lojore of Eastern Equatoria State has urged residents of Narus in Kapoeta East County to remain calm, united, and vigilant following recent clashes between the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) and the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF).

Speaking at a public rally in Narus, the governor sought to reassure the community amid ongoing security concerns.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page by Siro Silvio Ewak, Lobong cautioned against misinformation and unlawful activities, which he described as major threats to peace.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting civilians and preserving stability, calling on residents to engage through lawful channels and resume normal daily activities, including business and livelihoods.

“The Governor called on residents to remain calm and resume their normal daily activities, including business and other livelihoods,” the post noted.

Lobong also clarified that recent leadership changes, such as the relief of former commissioners, are standard administrative processes and should not be politicized.

The clashes last week between SPLA-IO and SSPDF forces prompted the governor’s intervention to prevent escalation and promote unity in the region.

This incident occurs against the backdrop of heightened tensions across South Sudan, particularly in Jonglei State, where renewed fighting since late December has displaced over 180,000 people.

In northern Jonglei—including areas like Pajut in Duk County—clashes have led to significant displacement, with more than 30,000 fleeing Pajut Payam alone after SPLA-IO captured the administrative center.

The governor’s appeal highlights efforts to contain localized violence and maintain peace in Eastern Equatoria, even as broader instability in Jonglei raises alarms from the UN and civil society groups calling for de-escalation and dialogue.
