Basajjabalaba’s Son Announces Bid for Deputy Speaker in Next Parliament

Hajji Iddi Basajjabalaba, the Member of Parliament-elect for Bushenyi–Ishaka Municipality, has announced his plans to contest the position of Deputy Speaker of Parliament during the 2026–2031 parliamentary term.

He is the son of Al Hajj Hassan Basajjabalaba, who serves as the chairperson of the NRM Entrepreneurs League.

Al Hajj maintains close ties with various key figures within the government.

The current Deputy Speaker is Thomas Tayebwa, who represents Ruhinda North County in Mitooma District.

Tayebwa assumed the role on March 25, 2022, stepping in after Anita Among advanced to become Speaker of Parliament following the passing of Speaker Jacob Oulanyah.

In related developments, reports indicate that Norbert Mao, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Laroo-Pece Division, is also considering a bid for the Speakership position, which is presently occupied by Anita Among.

Mao currently holds the portfolio of Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.
