NRM CEC Endorses Anita Among for Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa for Deputy

The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has officially endorsed Anita Annet Among for Speaker of Parliament and Thomas Tayebwa for Deputy Speaker, confirming them as the party’s preferred candidates for leadership in the incoming 12th Parliament.

The decision was reached during a CEC meeting held on Tuesday at State House, Entebbe, according to party officials.

This endorsement paves the way for the two legislators to be presented as the NRM’s official nominees when the new Parliament is convened and sworn in following the 2026 general elections.

Among, the current Speaker assumed office following the death of Speaker Jacob Oulanyah in March 2022 in Seattle, United States.

Her tenure has been marked by a busy legislative agenda, including the passage of major government bills and active oversight of executive actions.

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, who represents Ruhinda North County, has earned praise within the NRM for effectively managing parliamentary proceedings and navigating contentious debates in plenary sessions.

His re-endorsement reflects the party’s desire for continuity in House leadership.

NRM officials explained that the CEC’s choice aims to ensure stability in Parliament and maintain close alignment between the ruling party’s policy priorities and the direction of the legislature.

Under Uganda’s parliamentary rules, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker are formally elected by Members of Parliament during the first sitting of a new term.

However, the NRM’s significant majority in the House has historically ensured that its endorsed candidates secure the positions with relative ease.

The endorsements occur as political parties across the country complete internal preparations ahead of the swearing-in of the new Parliament following the January 2026 elections.
