President Yoweri Museveni has appointed veteran broadcaster Allan Kasujja as the new Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, as detailed in a letter dated December 27, 2025.
The correspondence, directed to Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, highlights the President’s hands-on role in resolving reported management challenges at the institution.
In the letter, Museveni noted that he had been unaware of certain internal activities at the Media Centre until receiving a communication from the CDF dated November 27, 2025.
He clarified, however, that Kasujja’s potential appointment had already been discussed at high levels some weeks prior.
The President confirmed he had instructed Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, to proceed with the appointment.
“I have already directed Dr. Chris Baryomunsi to appoint Allan Kasujja as Executive Director of the Media Centre. We can, then, look at the others,” Museveni wrote.
He further directed the minister—via a copy of the letter—to begin formal procedures for Kasujja’s installation and to evaluate suitable candidates for the deputy position.
Kasujja succeeds Ofwono Opondo, who stepped down from the role in April 2025 to focus on pursuing a political career.
With over 30 years in journalism, Allan Kasujja first gained recognition in the 1990s through his work at Sanyu FM and Capital FM in Uganda.
He became widely known as the host of the Ugandan edition of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, a position he has held since 2011.
Kasujja later moved to the BBC, where he served for 13 years as a senior presenter on the World Service’s Newsday program and hosted the Africa Daily podcast.
He departed the BBC in August 2025.
Notably, he co-moderated Uganda’s historic first presidential debate in 2016, featuring multiple candidates.
Advocates for the appointment highlight Kasujja’s extensive expertise and global experience, suggesting these qualities will bolster the government’s communication strategy and its interactions with domestic and international media outlets.
The Uganda Media Centre serves as a key body for harmonizing official government narratives, organizing press briefings, and bridging state entities with the press.
Kasujja is anticipated to take up the position officially once all administrative steps are finalized.
