Police in Mukono District have arrested two suspects linked to the vandalism of electricity infrastructure at Azam Construction Company Limited in Buligobe Village, Namawojolo Parish, Nama Sub-county.
The suspects, Mzee Asheraf and Geoffrey Mubiru, were detained after a security guard reported cut electric cables at around 8:00 a.m. on February 24, 2026, and requested canine assistance.
The Mukono Canine Unit, supported by CID investigators, quickly arrived at the scene. After determining the area was suitable for tracking, the police dog Judge followed a human scent for about 300 metres, leading officers straight to the suspects’ residence.
A search of the house recovered tools suspected of being used to cut the cables, shoes with soil matching the crime scene, and other exhibits connecting the pair to the offence.
According to Police, both suspects remain in custody while investigations continue.
The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has repeatedly warned against vandalism, which causes blackouts, delays new connections, and endangers lives.
In a February 11, 2026, community engagement in northern Uganda, UEDCL Head of Corporate and Stakeholder Affairs Jonan Kiiza stated: “A person convicted can be fined up to Sh 1 billion, jailed for up to 15 years, or face both penalties… These are serious penalties that we do not want our communities to fall into out of ignorance.”
UEDCL Managing Director Paul Mwesigwa has described vandalism in stark terms: “Vandalism is treason. We’re putting in place stringent measures to end this vice once and for all.”
The company stresses that such acts divert funds meant for expanding electricity access and undermine reliable supply to homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses.
