Uganda Police Arrest Five Suspects in Lubowa Motorcycle Robbery Crackdown

Police in Lubowa, Wakiso District, have achieved a major breakthrough in combating motorcycle-related robberies with the arrest of five young men suspected of orchestrating a string of thefts in the Lubowa and Ndejje areas.

The arrests follow an intelligence-led operation that began on February 5, 2026, when officers apprehended Kamoga Sharif, alias Mugisha (20), in Kyengera Town Council.

Upon questioning, he cooperated with investigators, leading them to his four accomplices. The suspects are: Kamoga Sharif (alias Mugisha), 20 years old, Byagaba Liberty, 20 years old, Ssempungu Patrick (alias Junior), 23 years old, Ssegawa Stuart, 19 years old and Ssenyonga Denis, 25 years old.

According to the Uganda Police Force, the group targeted motorcycles for robbery, then dismantled the bikes and sold the parts on the black market.

So far, authorities have recovered one motorcycle bearing registration number UMA 663HM as evidence.

Investigators have linked the suspects to at least 14 identified victims whose motorcycles were stolen between June 2025 and March 6, 2026.

The operation highlights ongoing challenges with motorcycle theft syndicates in peri-urban areas around Kampala, where such crimes often involve quick disassembly and resale of components to evade detection.

The announcement was made by SP Rachael Kawala, spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, who emphasized that the arrests represent significant progress in addressing public safety concerns in the region.

Efforts continue to track down additional suspects, including any individuals believed to be facilitating or receiving the stolen parts.

“Investigations remain active, and we are committed to dismantling these criminal networks to restore security for boda boda riders and residents,” police stated.

This development comes amid broader police operations across greater Kampala and surrounding districts targeting robbery, theft, and related crimes involving motorcycles—often used both as transport and tools in criminal activities.

The suspects are currently in custody as inquiries proceed, with potential charges related to aggravated robbery, theft, and handling stolen property expected.
