Mandela Re-elected Unopposed as SC Villa President for Five More Years

Hajji Omar Ahmed Hussein, popularly known as Mandela, has been officially declared president of Sports Club Villa (SC Villa) for a fresh five-year term after running unopposed in the club’s recent electoral process.

The announcement came on Tuesday, March 11, 2026, following the completion of nominations and verification by the SC Villa Electoral Commission.

Mandela was the sole candidate to fulfill all requirements, including approval from the club’s Board of Trustees.

“With only Mr. Omar Ahmed Hussein fulfilling the nomination requirements and receiving approval from the Board of Trustees, the commission declares him duly elected as president of SC Villa for the next five years,” said Electoral Commission chairperson Brian Kajubi.

Mandela, a prominent Ugandan business mogul and director of the Mandela Group of Companies (with interests in hospitality like Cafe Javas, retail via Savers Supermarkets, oil through City Oil, tyres, milling, and even the City Oilers basketball club), first assumed the presidency in November 2021.

His leadership has emphasized structured governance, player welfare improvements, debt clearance (notably settling UGX 550 million in arrears shortly after taking office), and rebuilding the squad to compete for domestic and continental honours.

Founded in 1975 and nicknamed the Jogoos, SC Villa is Uganda’s most decorated football club, boasting a record 17 Uganda Premier League titles, nine Uganda Cups, and three CECAFA Club Championships.

The re-election comes amid efforts to sustain long-term stability and growth, with Mandela previously outlining ambitions to build a “Sports Club Villa of 100 years” through investments like a proposed Shs4.7 billion land plan and sponsorship deals.

Other potential contenders—including Farouk Meywa, Dennis Mbidde, Simeon Kawuma Bulezi, and Joseph Muguluma Mbazzi (associated with former president Eng. Ben Misagga)—collected nomination forms but failed to meet the criteria or return them successfully, leading to Mandela’s uncontested victory.

The process unfolded against a backdrop of some internal tensions, including reported near-clashes between Mandela and Misagga during the nomination period, though the outcome has solidified continuity under his administration.

Mandela’s tenure has been credited by supporters and club officials for professionalizing operations and restoring competitiveness to one of Uganda’s historic giants in the Uganda Premier League.
