PLU Directs Affiliated MPs-Elect to Back Among and Tayebwa for Speaker, Deputy Speaker

The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has issued a formal directive to its affiliated Members of Parliament-elect for the incoming 12th Parliament, instructing them to support the candidates endorsed by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) for the key positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

In a letter dated March 11, 2026, signed by PLU General Secretary David Kabanda, MP, the organization urged its members to vote for incumbent Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among to retain the Speakership and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa to continue as Deputy Speaker.

The guidance stems directly from PLU Chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who emphasized unity under the “Tuko Pamoja” (We are together) principle between PLU and the ruling NRM.

The letter congratulated the newly elected MPs on their success and highlighted Among and Tayebwa’s “proven track record and unwavering commitment” to guiding parliamentary proceedings, steering legislative debates, and advancing patriotism and socio-economic transformation.

It noted that their leadership reflects the trust placed in them by the electorate and called for a consolidated front to ensure a smooth transition into the new parliamentary session, while maintaining decorum, dignity, and discipline during the selection process.

PLU, a youth-oriented political movement closely aligned with the NRM and led by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has positioned itself as a key supporter of the ruling party.

The directive reinforces coordination between PLU-leaning legislators and NRM structures ahead of the 12th Parliament’s convening, where leadership elections for Speaker and Deputy Speaker are expected soon.

The NRM CEC had earlier endorsed Among and Tayebwa in a meeting at State House Entebbe on February 20, 2026, crediting them for their roles in mobilizing support, campaigning nationwide, and contributing to the NRM’s success in the 2026 general elections.

No immediate reactions from the endorsed candidates, opposition figures, or independent MPs were detailed in the announcement.

The move signals an effort to maintain continuity in parliamentary leadership under NRM influence as the new House prepares to address legislative priorities.
