South Sudan: Communal Violence in Lakes State Leaves 10 Dead, 8 Wounded

Clashes between armed youths from rival communities in South Sudan’s Lakes State have left at least 10 people dead and eight others wounded, local officials reported on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

The violence erupted on Monday, March 23, 2026, at Mabor cattle camp.

It involved youths from the Gok community in Cueibet County and the Pakam community in neighbouring Rumbek North County.

Authorities said 33 heads of cattle were also raided during the fighting.

Lakes State Minister of Cabinet Affairs Stephen Mathiang Deng said the situation has since calmed down, and investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the clashes.

This latest incident adds to a pattern of recurrent inter-communal violence in Lakes State, often triggered by cattle rustling, revenge attacks, and competition over grazing land and water resources.

Such conflicts have persisted despite the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement, contributing to insecurity, displacement, and loss of livelihoods in the region.

No further details on the identities of the victims or the current security deployment were immediately available.
