Protecta Bode Wins Award as Liberty Expands Affordable Motor Insurance in Uganda

Liberty General Insurance Uganda’s innovative motor insurance product, Protecta Bode, has won the Judges’ Special Award at the IRA Insurance Innovation Awards 2025, highlighting its growing role in improving access to affordable insurance for motorists.

The recognition comes at a time when Uganda continues to face a high number of road crashes, leaving many drivers financially exposed due to limited or lack of insurance coverage.

Protecta Bode was introduced to bridge the gap between expensive comprehensive insurance and limited third-party cover. The product offers mid-level protection at a cost of just 1.5% of a vehicle’s value, making it more accessible to private car owners and small-scale operators.

The cover includes third-party injury and death, property damage, driver medical expenses, and partial damage to vehicles such as windscreens and lights.

Liberty says the solution is designed not only to protect motorists but also to reduce the financial burden caused by accidents and support safer road use.

A key feature of Protecta Bode is its digital-first model. Through partnerships with platforms like SafeBoda and SafeCar, motorists can purchase insurance, complete inspections, and process claims online, simplifying access for users.

Early figures show growing uptake, with UGX 120 million already collected in premiums, 60 vehicles insured, and more than 300 currently being onboarded. Claims have also been processed, helping to build trust among users.

The product is further supported by partnerships with companies such as Easy Ride Uganda, which provides road rescue services to insured motorists.

Liberty General Insurance says the initiative is part of its broader effort to promote inclusive insurance, safer mobility, and sustainable practices in line with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.

As traffic volumes increase across the country, the company believes solutions like Protecta Bode will play a key role in ensuring more Ugandans can access reliable and affordable motor insurance.
