FIFA Bans Former Cranes Star Mike Mutyaba and Two Others for Match-Fixing

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed worldwide bans on former Uganda Cranes player Mike Mutyaba, goalkeeper Emmanuel Kalyowa, and former Express FC CEO Ashraf Miiro Mwanje for their alleged involvement in match-fixing.

The bans, which took effect on March 12, 2026, prohibit the trio from all football-related activities globally (including playing, coaching, and administrative roles) for an indefinite period.

The sanctions stem from investigations into the highly suspicious 7-0 victory by Kitara FC over Express FC in a Uganda Premier League match played on December 21, 2024.

That result was flagged by FIFA’s betting integrity unit due to irregular betting patterns suggesting the match was manipulated.

The bans extend earlier provisional sanctions imposed by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) Ethics and Disciplinary Committee.

Several other individuals linked to the same case — including Saleh Maganda, Franco Oringa, Godfrey Lwesibawa, Yahaya Mahad Kakooza, Andrew Waiswa, George Nkurunziza, and Deogracious Opio — are already serving long-term FIFA-recognized bans of between 5 and 10 years.

The case of Express FC defender Ashraf Mbazira remains under review by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee, with no final decision yet.

FUFA has welcomed FIFA’s global enforcement, describing it as a strong message against match manipulation in Ugandan football.

Mike Mutyaba, a former standout midfielder for the Cranes and KCCA FC, had been working as assistant head coach at Express FC before the scandal.
