President Salva Kiir Mayardit has sacked Jemma Nunu Kumba as Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) and appointed a replacement.
The decision was announced through a presidential decree on Thursday, April 2, 2026.
Jemma Nunu Kumba, who has served as Speaker since 2021 and is also the SPLM-IO Deputy Chairperson for the Equatoria region, was relieved of her position.
She has been replaced by Dr. Abraham John Kwai, who was previously a member of the TNLA.
No official reason was given for her removal in the decree.
The move is the latest in a series of high-level reshuffles targeting SPLM-IO quota holders in both the national and state governments.
It comes amid growing tensions within the unity government and ahead of the planned general elections in December 2026.
Jemma Nunu Kumba is one of South Sudan’s most prominent female politicians and has been a key figure in the legislative arm of the transitional government.
As of now, there has been no immediate public reaction from the dismissed Speaker or the SPLM-IO leadership.
