South Sudan: 14 Killed as Small Passenger Plane Crashes Near Juba

South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority (SSCAA) has confirmed that a small passenger aircraft crashed on Monday, killing all 14 people on board.

The aircraft, a Cessna 208 Caravan with registration number 5Y-NOK, was operated by CityLink Aviation Ltd.

The plane took off from Yei for Juba International Airport at 9:15 am local time but lost communication with air traffic control at 9:43 am, SSCAA said in a statement.

On board were one pilot and 13 passengers, including two Kenyan nationals and 12 South Sudanese nationals.

There were no survivors.

Preliminary information indicates that poor weather conditions, particularly low visibility, may have contributed to the crash.

A full investigation is currently underway.

Rescue teams have been dispatched to the crash site, located about 20 kilometres southwest of Juba, to support recovery efforts and gather more information.

SSCAA extended its condolences to the families of the victims and promised to provide regular updates as more details emerge.

South Sudan has recorded several aviation accidents in recent years, many involving small aircraft operating in remote areas with limited infrastructure.

Safety concerns in the sector have often been linked to adverse weather, ageing aircraft, and operational challenges.
