South Sudan: Lightning Strike Kills SSPDF Soldier, Injures Two in Rumbek East County

A lightning strike killed a soldier from the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) and injured two other people in Maborduang village, Rumbek East County, Lakes State, during heavy rains on Thursday.

Rumbek East County Commissioner Malual Anyuon confirmed the incident while speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday.

“A similar incident happened last year in the Akot area, and again this year in the same part of Rumbek East County,” he said.

Anyuon urged residents to exercise caution during thunderstorms, advising them to avoid unnecessary movement, switch off mobile phones, and seek immediate shelter when lightning intensifies.

Mabor Dhieu, the owner of the house that was struck, said the lightning killed one person and injured a woman and a child.

The strike completely burned the tukul and destroyed most property inside.

“The lightning strike burned the entire tukul and destroyed property. Only a few items were left undamaged,” he said.

This is the second reported lightning-related fatality in the same area within a year.
