Uganda Police publicist Asan Kasingye has spoken out on reports suggesting that South Africa had written to Uganda to have the body of socialite Ivan Semwanga exhumed to recover the country’s currency, Rand, he was reportedly buried with last week.
Reports had also indicated that South Africa sought to verify rumours that Semwanga had faked his death and that he was alive – not dead and buried.
But Kasingye told reporters in Kampala on Monday that South Africa’s Interpol office was yet to write to Kampala with the request to exhume the “fallen” socialite’s body.
“We have not been requested to have the body exhumed. Even if there was something like that, it’s the Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France to write to us – not Interpol Pretoria [South Africa].”
Kasingye also questioned why South Africa would want Semwanga’s body exhumed yet the Rich Gang boss had died in Pretoria and his body cleared to be flown to Entebbe.
“They (South Africa) are the ones who sent the (Semwanga’s) body to Uganda…There is no way they can send a request to have the body exhumed over something that could have been confirmed in South Africa.”
