Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president Maj Gen (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu has rallied Ugandans to rise up and defend the constitution against what he called a plot by three-decade president Yoweri Museveni “to entrench himself in power”.
In a statement issued Thursday, Muntu, a former army commander in Museveni’s government, outlined three steps to block the removal of the age limit clause that bars anyone over 75 or below the age of 35 from standing for president.
If the age limit clause as provided for in article 102b of Uganda’s constitution is removed, Museveni will be eligible for reelection when Uganda next goes to the polls in 2021.
Museveni was born in 1944 and has been president since 1986 when his National Resistance Army, which Muntu was part of, took over power after a five-year guerrilla war.
In the three-point plan, Muntu has urged Ugandans “to rise as one and use whatever means available to them” to speak up against the plot, and pressurize their MPs and warn them against lifting the age limit.
He has also urged MPs across the political divide to block the move to entrench a Museveni life presidency.
