A court in Dar es Salaam on Friday sentenced popular Tanzanian actress Wema to one year in jail or pay a Tsh. 2000,000 (about UGX 3,300,000) after being found guilty of drug abuse.

The former Miss Tanzania was among the top artists in the country accused of abusing drugs.

In February this year, Police launched an onslaught on top celebrities who were allegedly involved in drug trafficking, asking them to report to the Central police for questioning.

Giving the ruling on Friday 20 July, the judge ruled that Sepetu must pay the fine or will risk being imprisoned.

The celebrities included Diamond Platnumz, TID, Ray C, Idris Sultan, Abbas Mutevu, Rugemarila Mutahaba, Vanessa Mdee, Tunda, Halidali Kavila. Amani Kashozi and Omry Sanga.

The court however set free her co-accused Ms Angelina Msigwa and Matrida Abas after the judge found them innocent of any wrongdoing.

It was alleged that on February 4, 2017, Ms Sepetu and the co-accused were found in possession of rolls of a drug known as bhang at Kunduchi Ununio.

In her defense, the actress said that though the rolls of bhang were found in her house, she did not know the owner.
