Museveni Speaks Out on Arua By-Elections

President Yoweri Museveni has come out to comment on yesterday’s poll in Arua that sent independent candidate Kassiano Wadri to parliament.

Wadri emerged winner, beating 11 other contestants including NRM’s Tiperu Nusura who came second and FDC’s Bruce Musema who came fourth.

Museveni remarked that the “elections were held peacefully because the organisers of violence and criminality had been arrested.”

Kassiano Wadri together with a number of his supporters including MPs were Monday arrested following a standoff in Arua town that left scores injured and one dead.

These were today charged with treason and remanded until Thursday August 30th.

Museveni said having elections without threats and violence is a step forward towards total democracy and development in the country.

“Nobody has got a right to intimidate a Ugandan by word or action,” the president said.

He however blamed the Monday evening chaos for the low voter turnup which he said had the most negative effect on the result.

“Out of the 46,000 registered voters, only 16,000 turned out to vote. Only 34% of the electorate. The others either feared to come to vote or the register is full of ghosts,” he said.
